stitched Santa Ornaments update ... Father Christmas series

Santa Ornaments (PS-Father Christmas)

6 out of a set of 8 ... for sure!
I will be putting on the backings, stuffing and FINISH 6.  Then 2  more to go.
I decided to use 'that' (looks like swirls of snow flakes to me) fabric for the backing ... I darkened it little more with my 'grungy formula' and like it better.

They have not been pressed yet as I just washed them with Orvis paste.  Since I do not use a hoop but rather in the hand X-stitched,  they needed a little TLC & cleaning.
The Prairie Sampler's, Father Christmas series are so 'dad gum' cute.  Will do the last two after I get these completely finished.  Hopefully in time for this 2012 Christmas.  I will be giving them my all, and they will be on their way ... A promise to myself.

Hope you are not too bored with this update, but I am just so delighted with the lot.

Thanks for visiting!
"Peace"

Lookee what I found~Strawberry Corn

I cannot believe I found these at our local 'Winco' Market, just this mornin'.
I am going back for more too.  Call me greedy, but it has been like "looking for a needle in a haystack
trying to find them.
I love placing them in my Fall arrangements...They add that special touch.

 'Dried Strawberry Corn'...

They are so sweet looking ... just like a strawberry.
That is probably how they got their name.
These can be stored away safely after this years use for next.
I always buy some cheap bay leaves to include
when puttin them into storage.
This helps to help keep the bugs away.
Have not had a problem yet!

I will be soaking the husks in some warm water to soften them up.
Then I can shape & form them to do what I want.
Then they are not so brittle...not at all what I would want.

Thanks for visiting...it has been a while for me.
Trying to get those Prairie Schooler, Santa Ornies done.
I am slow and still 2 more to go to complete the set of 8.
Will I make it ??? Ya never can tell.
Finally got started on the backings.

The top picture shows the husks  fluffed up after giving them some water...rather they have bloomed open, like a flower,
this softens them and they are not so brittle.

Have a great day with Blessings & much Peace!

DECISIONS ~ Choosing the backing ? ? ?

My Prairie Schooler's
'Father Christmas' Ornaments...

I am making progress as I had surgery on July 18th
and simply had NO desire to do much
of anything for about 3 1/2 weeks.
I am feeling back to normal and back in the saddle.
4 are stitched, but no backing.
Must make a decision.
Can't get started until that is made.

 This
OR
That
I will be using the 'envelope' method
Marly has shown in one of her tutorial blogs.

This will probably be my choice.
I like the rambling vine with berries design.

That looks too busy,
but I like symmetrical designs
and to me I see snow flakes.

Both have been stained with my
coffee, clove, vanilla & cinnamon grungy mix.
That is why the snow flakes pop cause the stain
was resisted and not absorbed as it was on the
unprinted parts of fabric.

Also, I must decide what to use for the filling.  Hmmmmm!

What say You???

A Folk Art Portrait rendition ~ Mary Briggs

Just finished my rendition of this Folk Art Portrait
by an unknown artist of Mary Briggs ~ 1840.
It has been painted on an 8" x 10", Acid Free,
Double Primed Canvas Board.

Also, I painted the Faux Grained Frame,
which was made by one of my friends and her hubs,
Joanne and Frank who live nearby in Victorville, CA.

Of coarse the VFA watermark is not a part of the painting.

I truly enjoyed doing the profile of this precious little girl.
Now I am looking and searching to do another.
I really do not know why it took me so long to bite the bullet.
 BUT,
Now I Gots to finish my 4th X-stitch Santa Ornament from
the 'Prairie Schoolers' Father Christmas collection
with 4 more to do after this one.
I am determined to have all 8 done by November.

Just had to Brag ... Sandies Puzzle

Sandy will be 48 yrs young (She keeps me young) on 8-18.
She has Williams Syndrome.
This recently completed 1000 piece puzzle,
will soon be taken apart to make room for her next one.
It is one of the few things she does that will keep her entertained for hours.

I have decided to take a picture that can be framed as a token.
Hopefully, she will not be so heart broken when it is dismantled.
I am truly amazed at her tenacity ... it was NOT an easy task ...

What say you?

My Interpretation of a Primitive Portrait by Belknap

I have been wanting to do this for some time...
My rendition of a Child's Primitive Portrait, this one done by
Zedekiah Belknap(1781-1858) ~ 'Girl in White with Cat'.
This is my first try at portraits and hope to be doing others.
I have been getting the itch to do more painting ... so here it is,
8" x 10" canvas board using acrylics and pencil.
Not sure about framing...maybe a faux graining technique...maybe not!

Now I have to get back to my PS Santa Ornament with 2 down ... am on my 3rd with 5 more to go.
For me it is a slow process, but I have also been under the weather with a touch of bronchitis.  Doing much better but still have the awful nagging dry tickle of a cough.
Anyways, I do get bored doing the same thing for too long, so thought I'd take the time to switch gears and paint ... I did! Now back to my counted X-stitch as I have a schedule that must be met by Christmas.

Thanks for visiting ... Have a great weekend and 4th of JULY too.

My Puppy Love, Kodiak * another Snow Dog

Just came from Robin's, 'Cranky Crow' Blog,
checking in on her 'Snow Dog'.
I was compelled to share today's photo of my 'Kody Bear'
(yes, he has many nick names of endearment)
resting with his toy 'Beaver'.
He is my handsome brute at 114 lbs, and furry son.

Taking one of his daily walks...
Rather, he is taking Dad for the walk...
You can't see Dad cause he is steering the golf cart - hahaha!

I am on a quest...Thanks to Marly!

I am on a Quest with almost one down and
seven more to go.

Thanks to Marly (Santas and Samplers)...
I feel in love with her Christmas mantle display.
I am determined to have all 8 of these
Santa Ornaments (PS-Father Christmas) ready
for December 2012.
If I get lucky, maybe more ...
knowing that I am not the fastest kid on the
block this will be a great challenge.
I just started counted X-stitching a
couple of years ago.
I did needle point in the 80's making each
of my 4 children a Christmas stocking.
It took me 8 years.

Now you know what I am up against
and it is worse now.
I am now retired ... then I was not,
but, working full time.
So cheer me on !!!

Abraham Lincoln Silhouette ~ God Bless America

Yes, it took me longer than I thought ... but, I finally got 'Honest Abe' painted .

Tim and Carol (Firecracker Kid) custom made me a couple more of these frames that I designed specifically for these small silhouettes.
 (Sorry about the glare ...
will have to re-shoot these pictures.)
They 'fill the bill' perfectly.
I have painted and crackled the frame with red showing thru, and finally sanded and antiqued both silhouette and frame.

I painted another George Washington too. "Father of His Country"
Now there is a matching pair.

I have them paired together on my pewter cabinet ... for now.
I am happily pleased with the results and will probably display them year round to show our Patriotism and "Love for America".

Just thought you might like to know...

SONDRA LYN SHORES

This is our Sandy, Our first daughter... She is a true Blessing in so many ways and she has
 "Williams Syndrome"

FYI...

Pictured below of some of the 'WS' kids  ...

What is Williams Syndrome?

Williams syndrome is a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone.  It is characterized by medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities.  These occur side by side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities and an affinity for music.
WS affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide – an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people in the United States. It is known to occur equally in both males and females and in every culture.
Unlike disorders that can make connecting with your child difficult, children with WS tend to be social, friendly and endearing.  Parents often say that the joy and perspective of a child with WS brings into their lives had been unimaginable.
But there are major struggles as well.  Many babies have life-threatening cardiovascular problems.  Children with WS need costly and ongoing medical care, and early interventions (such as speech or occupational therapy) that may not be covered by insurance or state funding.  As they grow, they struggle with things like spatial relations, numbers and abstract reasoning, which can make daily tasks a challenge. And as adults, most people with WS need supportive housing to live to their fullest potential.  Many adults with WS contribute to their communities as volunteers or paid employees, for example working at senior homes and libraries or as store greeters or veterinary aides.
Just as important are opportunities for social interaction. As people with WS mature – beyond the structure of school and family activities – they often experience intense isolation which can lead to depression.  They are extremely sociable and experience the normal need to connect with others; however people with Williams syndrome often don’t process nuanced social cues and this makes it difficult to form lasting relationships.
Common features of Williams syndrome include:
Characteristic facial appearance
Most young children with Williams syndrome are described as having similar facial features. These features include a small upturned nose, long philtrum (upper lip length), wide mouth, full lips, small chin, and puffiness around the eyes. Blue and green-eyed children with Williams syndrome can have a prominent "starburst" or white lacy pattern on their iris. Facial features become more apparent with age.
Heart and blood vessel problems
The majority of individuals with Williams syndrome have some type of heart or blood vessel problem. Typically, there is narrowing in the aorta (producing supravalvular aortic stenos is SVAS), or narrowing in the pulmonary arteries. There is a broad range in the degree of narrowing, ranging from trivial to severe (requiring surgical correction of the defect). Since there is an increased risk for development of blood vessel narrowing or high blood pressure over time, periodic monitoring of cardiac status is necessary.

Hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium levels)
Some young children with Williams syndrome have elevations in their blood calcium level. The true frequency and cause of this problem is unknown. When hypercalcemia is present, it can cause extreme irritability or "colic-like" symptoms. Occasionally, dietary or medical treatment is needed. In most cases, the problem resolves on its own during childhood, but lifelong abnormality in calcium or Vitamin D metabolism may exist and should be monitored.
Low birth-weight / slow weight gain
Most children with Williams syndrome have a slightly lower birth-weight than their brothers or sisters. Slow weight gain, especially during the first several years of life, is also a common problem and many children are diagnosed as "failure to thrive". Adult stature is slightly smaller than average.

Feeding problems
Many infants and young children have feeding problems. These problems have been linked to low muscle tone, severe gag reflex, poor suck/swallow, tactile defensiveness etc. Feeding difficulties tend to resolve as the children get older.

Irritability (colic during infancy)
Many infants with Williams syndrome have an extended period of colic or irritability. This typically lasts from 4 to 10 months of age, then resolves. It is sometimes attributed to hypercalcemia. Abnormal sleep patterns with delayed acquisition of sleeping through the night may be associated with the colic.

Dental abnormalities
Slightly small, widely spaced teeth are common in children with Williams syndrome. They also may have a variety of abnormalities of occlusion (bite), tooth shape or appearance. Most of these dental changes are readily amenable to orthodontic correction.

Kidney abnormalities
There is a slightly increased frequency of problems with kidney structure and/or function.

Hernias
Inguinal (groin) and umbilical hernias are more common in Williams syndrome than in the general population.

Hyperacusis (sensitive hearing)
Children with Williams syndrome often have more sensitive hearing than other children; Certain frequencies or noise levels can be painful an/or startling to the individual. This condition often improves with age.

Musculoskeletal problems
Young children with Williams syndrome often have low muscle tone and joint laxity. As the children get older, joint stiffness (contractures) may develop. Physical therapy is very helpful in improving muscle tone, strength and joint range of motion.

Overly friendly (excessively social) personality
Individuals with Williams syndrome have a very endearing personality. They have a unique strength in their expressive language skills, and are extremely polite. They are typically unafraid of strangers and show a greater interest in contact with adults than with their peers.

Developmental delay, learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder
Most people with Williams syndrome mild to severe learning disabilities and cognitive challenges. Young children with Williams syndrome often experience developmental delays.  Milestones such as walking, talking and toilet training are often achieved somewhat later than is considered normal. Distractability is a common problem in mid-childhood, which can improve as the children get older.
Older children and adults with Williams syndrome often demonstrate intellectual "strengths and weaknesses." There are some intellectual areas (such as speech, long term memory, and social skills) in which performance is quite strong, while other intellectual areas (such as fine motor and spatial relations) show significant weakness.

GEORGE WASHINGTON SILHOUETTE

I have been wanting to do a profile silhouette of
George Washington and Abe Lincoln for some time.
Then I found' Firecracker Kid Primitives'... (check them out)
http://firecrackerkid.blogspot.com/
Carol & hubby custom made for me this small primitive frame
that I thought would be ideal for my plan.
~ IT TURNED OUT PERFECT ~
Here is a picture of Georgy ... a pretty good likeness if I say so myself.
The frame is perfectly made and completes the design.

I painted it red, then black and crackled the finish.  For the finishing touch,
I sanded it some more for a more prim look.
I am a 'HAPPY CAMPER' today.

Next is Honest Abe...

"Basket of Memories" is fini !

This was so much fun ... Reward of Merit Pincushion
I used chenille trim around the edges.
Filled with ground English walnut shells.
It will be given as a gift to one of my girls.

#1
The picture has to be re shot as the
night time lighting is not good
and I prefer to not use the flash.

#2
 Hmmmm ... What a difference ...
#1 - I used incandescent lighting...
#2 - just natural light from the good ole sun.
I doo believe I like the warmth in #1 Best.

Anyways, it is a delightful pattern from 'Blackbird Designs'.

Tamar Angevine,born April 22, 1811.
married to Isaac W. Moseman.
HOPE I have not bored you too much.
Just maybe someone looking for her ancestry
will find this bit of info...just maybe.

Now she needs some undies...

NOT 18 months...I just finished her pantaloons!

...Tamar has pantaloons ...
She is now respectable!

Notice the 'Cluny Ric Rac' Trim

2011 CHRISTMAS in APPLE VALLEY, CA.

~ENTER~

My limited Dept 56 village on the credenza...

WHEELER's Bicycle Shop (my maiden name)...
CHURCH (Reminds me of 'Our Lady of the Snow' in Woodstock, VT. where we used to attend masses)...
TRAIN STATION (This one reminds me of the train depot in Hawthorne, N.Y. where, as a child, we would ride to Grand Central Station, N.Y.)...
I gave the rest of my collection to
my children for them to enjoy now.

Last year I started collecting these
'bottle brush Christmas Trees from the 40's
~that makes them as old as me and hubs'~
It has been a challenge...I am not sure,
but I do believe they are from Germany.
If anyone can shed some light...I would love to know.
Our Sandy strung and provided the Garland of Cranberries
from about ten years back.
I save them from year to year... they are wonderful dried.

The Church was from my 9th Christmas...It has done a LOT of traveling and I love including the
Vintage Christmas Trees in the display.
Of course the 'Memories Christmas Tree'
has second center stage...after the 'Nativity' display.
It includes some Kugel Ornaments from my
fathers childhood, as well as several ornaments from mine
and also from my 50 years of marriage to the 'love of my life', Chuck and from our four children's Christmases too.

My maternal Grandmother crocheted the 'BREAD' doilie,
which I had framed to preserve.
One of my larger paper mache Belsnickles is displayed
here in the Dining Room area.

This year I took a fancy to collecting some pewter.
Some of my recently acquired treasures are displayed
in my pewter cabinet plus
more of my Belsnickles,
my hand sculpted paper mache Santa ornaments,
My treasured Red Cardinal from Audrey,
the Weatherfield Merino Sheep from Doreen,
the Santa with Lamb sitting on lamp table a gift from Starla
and a few more family heirlooms.

A full view of the Shores' Memories Christmas Tree.

I do hope your Christmas was as Blessed as ours and I pray that God Blesses & Protects America and ALL of us that love her and honor her, especially our WARRIORS.
