Papa found Grandmother's hooked rugs

A BIG hug for Papa . . .
We have been cleaning out our garage.  In California you usually do not have attics or cellars which is the case for us.  So in this dusty process, Papa comes upon a box, opens it and comments "You don't want this do you?"  I passed a gander in his direction and gasped...cause if he had trashed it,
it would be... no tellin'.
He found the box with my Grandmother's,
Carrie Shann Moseman Wheeler, Hooked rugs.

So far this is the first that I have photographed.
It is so amazing to me how vibrant the colors are.

It appears to me that she signed it
using what I believe to be a rock for the background
and her first name ' Carrie'.

The backside shows strips of various kinds
of material whip stitched on for hanging the rug.
I am 78, and I always knew her to be hooking rugs.
These rugs could very well be 100 years old.
My mother told me Granma Carrie would enter her rugs
yearly in the Westchester County Fair,
White Plains, N.Y. and won many awards.
I am so happy that dear Papa uncovered them.
I think there is one more and I will take more pictures.
* * *
I have many chores that need my attention... so TTYL
Again, thanks for visiting ...

P.S.:  There are 4 more rugs ... what a treasure Papa has unfolded.
I knew that they had been packed away years ago.  Hoping that during our travels they had not been lost... just, simply misplaced.
Eureka ...
Family Treasures and Heirlooms have been re-discovered.

    1. Oh Julie, It was a close call. If I had not been there when Papa/Hubs opened the box, and he not knowing or realizing what they were... I dare not think what could have been their fate. Hubs was determined to get the garage cleaned out...and he did.
Thanks for stopping by, keep kool. It was 90+ here today.
      Peace, Barb

    1. Yes Lauren, and If I had not been there at that time, I may have never known of their fate. To Hubs, it was stuff we did not need.
He had a mission, plain and simple.
Thanks for visiting and Enjoy the weekend,
      Peace, Barb

  4. What a wonderful find. I'll bet you cried. I did when I had a similar experience, that one being my father's teddy bear, lovingly repaired by my grandmother, even though her repair of his ears made him look a bit more like a monkey than a bear. I think I actually valued it even more because of that repair, if truth be told. I thought we had lost that teddy bear in a move, but was ecstatic when my husband found it after almost 20 years, after cleaning out our garage. ...jan

    1. Hi Jan, I am not one to cry very often but I just may have never known of their demise and give hubs credit for doing such a wonderful job of cleaning out the garage. To him it was stuff not being used. The last time I saw them was in '96 when we packed and moved to VT for 4 years. Our 3 other children were not about to leave California so we finally decided to return and go back home. Those wonderful rugs have had a long rest and now it is time to once again enjoy them. I am so delighted that they are is such good shape for what ever their age. I just hope my children will appreciate and treasure them too.
I still have 4 more to picture and show everyone.
      Thanks so much for visiting.
      Peace for all, Barb
