First time Hooking...

This has been a slow process for me...learning as I go with my share of 'goof ups'.
Actually, I think I am allergic to this burlap (am using it 'cause my Grama used it) and she was always an inspiration to me.
After about 10 to 15 minutes of hooking
my eyes begin to burn and water.
Sounds like allergies to me.
I know I am hooking too tight
(after doing some research on various tutorials),
but that is part of the learning curve...right?

Also, if you look closely, the dark strips have a lot of loose threads
that seem to be a problem for me...or is it just me?
So now I am seriously thinking of making this smaller.
The size of my foot rest top is 9" x 17".
Perhaps 7" x 15" or so, thus giving me a
1" to 1 1/2" border all around.  Sounds good to me.
Don't think I will continue using this burlap after this project.
That means finding another suitable backing
for the primitive look and feel that I love.
I am open for suggestions.
Any HELP will be greatly appreciated.

  1. I love your colors. I use Primitive Linen for my backing. When I first began hooking I used Monks cloth and boy did I pack the loops in. Monks cloth tends to stretch and the linen doesn't . I have only been hooking a for about 3 years so I am still learning.

  2. Barb,
It looks great! I, too, would recommend primitive linen. It's the only thing I've ever hooked on and I love it. I tried monk's cloth once and hated it! As for the stringiness, some wools do not felt as good as others or perhaps it was cut a bit off the grain. I am obsessive-compulsive about strings - I clip them one by one.
    Keep up the good work!
    Hugs :)

  3. Hi Barb,
You are doing a great job! I agree with Lauren about the primitive linen, although I did use monk's cloth once and didn't really have a problem, but I just love linen, so will stick with it! I had a really stringy red wool that drove me crazy and I did LOTS of clipping, too! Just keep pulling those loops and maybe take come allergy meds to help with those watering eyes!!
    Great job, my friend!

  5. I hope it is the burlap and not the wool you are allergic to....I know several people who are allergic to wool...and that could be devastating to a hooker... I think your project looks great....I have hooked for years and years...and still am a very tight hooker (wow...that sounds bad LOL).... I have used burlap, monk's cloth and linen....my favorite is the linen.... Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin
